Thursday, November 26: Happy Thanksgiving!

Day 5

Today's Reading: Philippians 4:6; Colossians 4:2

Throughout the Word, God instructs us to offer up thanksgiving to Him in our prayers. Philippians 4:6 and Colossians 4:2 gently remind us of the essential role thanksgiving plays in our conversations with God, urging us to infuse our prayers with gratitude.

Philippians 4:6 encourages us to approach God without anxiety, presenting our requests with thanksgiving. Here, gratitude isn't an optional add-on but a vital ingredient that flavors our petitions with trust and reliance on God's provision.

Similarly, Colossians 4:2 invites us to be diligent in prayer, coupling our petitions with watchfulness and thankfulness. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a thankful attitude as we engage in prayer, acknowledging God's goodness and faithfulness.

When we embrace gratitude in prayer, a beautiful transformation occurs. Our worries diminish as we focus on God's sovereignty and unwavering love. Expressing gratitude humbles us because it makes us recognize that every good gift comes from God, so it fosters a deeper dependence on Him.

Moreover, gratitude in prayer fosters intimacy with God, drawing us into closer communion with Him. It aligns our hearts with His will, surrendering our desires to His perfect plan for our lives.

As we weave gratitude into our prayers, let's remember that it's not merely a duty but a privilege. It's an invitation to draw near to God, recognizing His goodness amidst life's challenges. May our prayers be saturated with thanksgiving, ushering in His peace that transcends all understanding.

Today, let's commit to embracing gratitude in our prayers, trusting in God's faithfulness and goodness. And as we lift our requests to Him, may gratitude pave the way for His peace to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Today, instead of writing down what you’re thankful for, use the Family Gratitude Guide to talk about it at your Thanksgiving meal.

Thanksgiving Family Gratitude Guide

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1

Looking Back

Take turns answering one or more of these questions:

  • What is one blessing you’re especially thankful for this year?
  • When did you see God answer a prayer this year?
  • What is one challenge that helped your faith grow?
  • Who made a difference in your life this year?
  • What’s one memory from this year that you’ll never forget?
Looking Around

Share something you’re thankful for about each person at the table.

  • "One thing I appreciate about you is…”
  • "One reason I’m thankful for you is…”
Looking Ahead

As you think about the coming year:

  • What’s one way you want to draw closer to God?
  • Who is one person you can encourage or serve?
  • What’s one prayer you’ll be asking God to answer next year?
Family Prayer

Invite everyone to share a prayer request. Then ask one person to thank God for His faithfulness and pray for your family together.
